Hehkuva Design is a full-service lighting design agency founded by lighting designer Karoliina Helin.

My aim is to make good lighting available for everyone.

My priority is to find the possibilities, and explore the options available, to light each space, and to apply the correct amount of light where it is needed and wanted. Light does not exist without shadows, but you need to know how to use them, to create a concept that also works in practice.

Most of my work is focused on creating permanent lighting solutions, to both public spaces and private homes. My job is to find and create the right lighting concept and execution to the needs of my client and the users of the space. Part of this is to be familiar with the local lighting regulations, and to make sure the amount of light available is in line with those, whilst being aware of the most recent developments and trends within the industry.

I have a bachelors’ degree in Interior Architecture from the University of the West of England in the UK, so the basics of architecture and different facets of art, as well as conceptual thinking, are more than familiar. After graduating I started working in a lighting design company, and ever since that has been where my passion resides. The process of how we turn architecture into inviting and efficient spaces shows, how important properly designed and well working light is in the creation of experiences within the built environment.

I have completed an additional course in the fundamentals of lighting design at the Lighting Industry Association in the UK. The LIA Academy is one of the best recognised institutions providing education and studies in lighting in the UK.

The latest interest in my ever-consistent aim to better myself, has been to learn to programme Casambi-controlled lighting installations. This has given me another opportunity to make sure that the lighting design imagined in the space is also available to the end user, by programming the different lighting scenes designed at concept stage by myself.
